It may not seem the season for it, but did you know some of the best freshwater trout fishing can be done during the coldest months of the year? Most people think of winter as ice fishing season only. But by paying close attention to weather patterns, winter can offer some memorable — if slightly uncomfortable — days on-stream as well.
Winter trout fishing in running water requires patience, weatherproof clothing, and the ability to ignore cold fingers and toes. Fish tend to eat less and hide in deeper water in winter, especially when temperatures are frigid and streams become slow-moving and clear. But during the occasional winter thaw, when water temperatures increase slightly, anglers may find fast-flowing, cloudy runoff — and hungry fish.
